Location description:

Balchik is a small picturesque town on the Black Sea coast in northeastern Bulgaria. The romance of the narrow, shady streets and the beauty of the Black Sea have come together here. Balchik is still known as ´´The White City´´ because of the limestone cliffs in the area. Historical reports about the city existed before the birth of Christ and traces of many different cultures, from the Thracians to the Romans to the Proto-Bulgarians, were discovered in the city and its surroundings. The original artifacts from ancient times are on display in the Museum of History in the city center.

A number of significant sights can be visited in Balchik. Some of them are in the list of the 100 most famous sights of Bulgaria: including the large-scale complex of architecture and park art ´´Dworetsa´´ (´´The Palace´´), which was considered the summer residence of the Romanian Queen in the past and during the Romanian Occupation of South Dobruja (1919-1940) was established; as well as the world-famous botanical garden, home to the second largest cactus collection in the world (the world's largest is in Monaco) and many other rare plant species. ´´Dworetsa´´ and the botanical garden are the symbols of Balchik.

The closest major cities are Varna (40 km away) and Dobrich (35 km away). Albena, one of the largest and most famous Bulgarian seaside resorts, is only 10 km away. There is a bus route in the direction of Albena both in summer and in winter. To the north, 35 km away, is Cape Kaliakra, the furthest eastern point in Bulgaria, which can be seen with the naked eye from the Bay of Balchik when the weather is clear.
