Chepelare is situated in a mountainous area of the Rhodope Mountains; at an elevation of 1,232 meters above sea level, it is the second-highest town in Bulgaria, after Dospat. The town lies on the main Plovdiv–Smolyan road, 26 km north of the regional center of Smolyan, 70 km south of Plovdiv, 11 km north of the Pamporovo resort complex, and 217 km from the capital, Sofia. It has a temperate continental climate. Snow cover persists for 80 to 120 days a year, with an average depth of 30–80 cm. The Chepelarska River flows through the town, and the Kamburska River flows into it.
Chepelare is not only a winter destination. During spring, summer and autumn, the surrounding mountains provide excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, nature photography and exploring traditional Rhodope villages.
The region is renowned for its forests, mountain landscapes, clean air and traditional Bulgarian hospitality.
Summers are generally pleasantly mild compared with Bulgaria's lowland regions, making Chepelare attractive to buyers seeking a cooler mountain retreat.
